Dear Beautiful You,
It happened on an ordinary morning.
I opened the door, expecting the familiar warmth, and instead felt that first little whisper of autumn.
Not quite cold.
Just different.
The kind of morning that makes you reach for your favorite sweater, hold your coffee a little longer, and think about putting something warm in the oven.
I love that feeling.
There's something comforting about pulling on a sweater you've owned for years. It knows your shape. It's soft in all the right places. You don't have to think about it.
And somewhere between my first sip of coffee and getting ready for the day, I had a funny thought.
I wonder if my skin wishes it had a sweater, too.
Because our skin notices the seasons, even when we're too busy to notice ourselves.
And sometimes, it has a quiet way of asking for a little more care.
THE SKIN NOTE
Your skin has its own weather forecast.
Have you ever noticed that your face feels perfectly comfortable one week, then suddenly feels tight after washing it the next?
Or that your legs start looking a little ashy, even though you haven't changed a thing?
Here's the interesting part.
Our skin has a protective outer layer called the skin barrier. Think of it as a beautifully designed wall that helps keep moisture in and everyday irritants out.
As humidity drops and indoor heating increases, water can escape from the skin more easily. Scientists call this transepidermal water loss.
That's a complicated name for something most of us recognize immediately:
That tight feeling.
That rough patch.
That sudden desire to put lotion on everything.
And it doesn't necessarily mean you need ten new skincare products.
Sometimes, your skin is simply asking you to change how you care for it.
Three little autumn adjustments
1. Turn down the heat—on your face.
Hot water feels wonderful on a chilly morning, but it can make dryness worse. Try lukewarm water when washing.
2. Think hydration, then comfort.
A hydrating essence or serum can help draw water into the skin's outer layers. Following with a moisturizer helps reduce moisture loss.
3. Don't forget the skin below your chin.
Your elbows, knees, hands, and legs experience seasonal dryness, too. Applying a suitable moisturizer after bathing, while skin is slightly damp, can help keep it comfortable.
And one more thing: autumn doesn't mean sunscreen season is over. UV exposure still matters throughout the year.

A LITTLE SOMETHING YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW
Your moisturizer and your hydrating serum have different jobs.
Imagine watering a beautiful plant.
Water matters, of course.
But so does the environment that helps the soil hold onto that moisture.
Skincare works a little like that.
Ingredients called humectants, such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, help attract and hold water.
Emollients help skin feel softer and smoother.
Occlusive ingredients help slow water loss from the surface.
A good routine may combine these functions.
It's not about putting more and more things on your face.
It's about understanding what each step contributes.
THE FIVE-MINUTE RITUAL
A sweater for your skin.
Tomorrow morning, try something different.
Before checking your messages, give yourself five quiet minutes.
Cleanse gently.
Apply your hydrating essence.
Smooth on your serum.
Finish with a moisturizer suited to your skin.
And while you're doing it, think of one thing you appreciate about this season of your life.
Not something you want to change.
Something you want to keep.
Maybe it's the wisdom you've earned.
Maybe it's your laugh.
Maybe it's knowing what you no longer have to explain to anyone.
Some of the most beautiful things about us become more comfortable with time.
Like a favorite sweater.
THE QUESTION WE DON'T USUALLY ASK
What is one thing about yourself that you've grown to love more with time?
I'd love for you to think about that this week.
Maybe even tell someone.
Because the things we learn to love about ourselves deserve to be celebrated.
